Tour Highlights:

Medan

Indonesia's fourth-largest city, occupies a strategic point on Sumatra's northeast coast and is a major entry point for boats and flights from Malaysia. It has acquired a reputation for being filthy and chaotic, but also holds some glorious examples of nineteenth-century colonial architecture, built by the Dutch gentry, who grew rich on the back of the vast plantations that stretch up the slopes of the Bukit Barisan to the west of the city. The boom was started by the entrepreneurial Jacob Nienhuys, who saw the potential for tobacco plantations, prompting even the local royalty to migrate to the city to be nearer the action.

Lake Toba - Parapat

Lake Toba-Parapat is the largest lake in Southeast Asia with a surface area about 1,145 sq. kilometers. It is also  the deepest lake in the world, over 450 meters deep. The town of Parapat is the main tourist resort and lies on the shores of the lake. The Bataks Toba and Batak Simalungun people of Parapat are happy, easygoing people, known for their lively and sentimental love songs.

Samosir Island

The island of Samosir, in the middle of Lake Toba, is accesible by regular ferries from Parapat. The original home of the flerce Toba Bataks, the island has many sites of stone tombs and traditional villages. The villages of Tomok, Tuk-tuk, Siallagan and Ambarita are noteworthy. Transportation can be arranged through your hotel or rent a motorcycle for a day's adventure on the island. Accomodations ofvarious styles and standards are readily available.
